Red Planaria in Reef Tanks: Identification, Risks, and Treatment

Red planaria are one of the most common reef tank pests. Learn how to identify them, why they're dangerous, and how to eliminate them safely without crashing your tank.

What Are Red Planaria?

Red planaria (Convolutriloba spp.) are small, rust-red flatworms that are one of the most common pests in reef aquariums. They’re typically introduced through live rock, coral frags, macroalgae, and other hitchhikers on new additions—which is why proper quarantine and dipping are so important.

At low numbers they’re often more of an eyesore than a serious threat, but they reproduce rapidly through asexual reproduction and can quickly blanket your rockwork, sandbed, and corals in a dense rust-colored carpet.

How to Identify Them

  • Flat, oval-shaped worms, typically 2–5 mm long
  • Rust-red to orange-brown color with a slightly pointed or forked tail
  • Glide smoothly across surfaces rather than crawling
  • Often found in clusters on rockwork, sand, glass, and the undersides of corals
  • Easy to spot under a flashlight after the lights go out, although they’re commonly visible during the day as populations increase

Don’t confuse them with copepods (which dart or jump), amphipods (which are larger and shrimp-like), or beneficial polyclad flatworms, which are typically much larger.

Why Are They Dangerous?

Red planaria become problematic for two primary reasons:

They can smother corals — Large populations can cover coral tissue, reducing light exposure, irritating polyps, and preventing normal feeding. Sensitive corals may remain closed or decline over time.

They’re toxic when they die — This is the greatest risk. When large numbers of red planaria die simultaneously (whether from chemical treatment or another cause), they release toxic compounds into the water that can stress or kill fish, corals, and other invertebrates. This is why treatment should always be planned carefully.

Treatment Options

1. Flatworm Exit (Most Common)

Flatworm Exit (by Two Little Fishies) is the most widely used chemical treatment. It’s highly effective but should be used carefully because of the toxins released during mass die-off.

Steps:

  • Siphon out as many flatworms as possible before treatment.
  • Prepare fresh activated carbon and enough saltwater for a large water change.
  • Remove or turn off activated carbon and UV sterilizers before dosing (follow the manufacturer’s instructions).
  • Dose exactly according to the manufacturer’s recommended instructions.
  • As flatworms begin dying, siphon out as many as possible.
  • After treatment, perform a 25–50% water change if needed and install fresh activated carbon.
  • Monitor livestock closely for the next 24–48 hours.

2. Biological Predators

Several animals are known to consume red planaria, although results vary from tank to tank.

Common predators include:

  • Blue Velvet Nudibranch (Chelidonura varians) (one of the most effective natural predators but often starves once the flatworms are eliminated)
  • Melanurus Wrasse
  • Six Line Wrasse
  • Yellow “Coris” Wrasse (Halichoeres chrysus)
  • Some mandarins and dragonets (occasionally, but not consistently)

Predators are best used to help keep populations under control or prevent future outbreaks. They should not be relied upon to eliminate a severe infestation by themselves.

3. Manual Removal

Use a turkey baster or siphon hose during water changes to physically remove as many flatworms as possible.

While this won’t completely eliminate the infestation, it significantly reduces the number of worms that will die during treatment, lowering the amount of toxins released into the aquarium.

Prevention

  • Quarantine all new corals, live rock, macroalgae, and frags for 2–4 weeks whenever possible.
  • Dip all new corals before adding them to your display aquarium using a quality coral dip such as CoralRx, Revive, or Bayer (where appropriate).
  • Inspect frags carefully with a flashlight or magnifying glass before purchase and again during quarantine.
  • Remember that coral dips reduce the risk of pests but do not guarantee removal of every flatworm or egg, making quarantine your best defense.
