Euphyllia-eating flatworms are a devastating pest that targets Torch, Hammer, and Frogspawn corals. Learn how to spot them early and treat before they cause irreversible damage.

What Are Euphyllia-Eating Flatworms?

“Euphyllia-eating flatworms” (commonly abbreviated EEFW) is the name reef hobbyists use to describe small flatworms that have been observed feeding on Torch, Hammer, Frogspawn, Octospawn, and other Euphyllia corals. Although these pests are widely reported throughout the hobby, they have not yet been formally identified as a single scientifically described species.

Because they’re small, well-camouflaged, and spend much of their time near the coral’s skeleton, infestations often go unnoticed until tissue damage becomes obvious. Early detection and quarantine remain the best defense.

How to Identify Them

EEFW are extremely difficult to spot.

  • Small (approximately 1–3 mm), flat, and translucent to cream-colored
  • Often found near the base of Euphyllia polyps, along the tissue margin, or within skeletal cavities
  • Frequently blend in with the coral and surrounding tissue
  • Best observed using a magnifying glass, jeweler’s loupe, or by inspecting dip water after a coral dip
  • White egg masses may occasionally be found attached to the skeleton or frag plug, although identifying them with certainty can be difficult

Signs of a Possible Infestation

  • Reduced or absent polyp extension despite stable water parameters
  • Tissue recession beginning near the base of the coral
  • Localized tissue irritation or unexplained tissue loss
  • Brown or pale patches developing on otherwise healthy tissue
  • A Euphyllia coral that slowly declines despite appropriate lighting, flow, and water chemistry
  • Flatworms visible in the dip container after the coral is gently agitated

Because these symptoms can also result from bacterial infections, brown jelly disease, excessive flow, coral warfare, or unstable water chemistry, diagnosis should be based on observing the flatworms themselves whenever possible.

Why They’re So Dangerous

Suspected EEFW feed directly on Euphyllia tissue, causing chronic irritation that prevents normal polyp extension and healing. As populations increase, affected corals may lose tissue, stop growing, and become more susceptible to secondary bacterial infections.

One of the greatest challenges is that eggs are believed to be resistant to commonly used coral dips. Even if every visible flatworm is removed, newly hatched worms can restart the infestation days later. This is why repeated treatment and careful inspection are essential.

Treatment

1. Coral Dipping

Repeated coral dipping remains the primary treatment for suspected EEFW infestations.

Commonly used coral dips include:

  • CoralRx
  • Revive Coral Cleaner
  • PolypLab Reef Primer

Historically, some hobbyists used Bayer Advanced Complete Insect Killer, but because the product has been discontinued and formulations have changed, commercially available coral dips are generally recommended instead.

Dip Process

  • Prepare the dip according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
  • Place the coral in the dip for the recommended exposure time.
  • Use a turkey baster or pipette to blast around the base of each polyp and throughout the skeleton.
  • Inspect the dip container under a flashlight for dislodged flatworms.
  • Rinse the coral in clean saltwater before returning it to quarantine.

Repeat the dipping process every 4–7 days for 4–6 weeks to eliminate newly hatched flatworms before they mature.

2. Manual Removal

During each dip:

  • Inspect the skeleton carefully using magnification.
  • Remove any suspected egg masses with a soft toothbrush, dental pick, or scalpel.
  • Pay close attention to the bases of polyps, branch junctions, and frag plugs.

Manual egg removal greatly improves the chances of completely eliminating the infestation.

3. Quarantine

Whenever possible, move affected Euphyllia into a dedicated quarantine aquarium.

This allows:

  • Frequent dipping without stressing the display aquarium
  • Easier observation for new flatworms or eggs
  • Prevention of spreading the infestation to healthy Euphyllia

Continue quarantine until no flatworms, egg masses, or new tissue damage are observed for several consecutive weeks.

4. Biological Predators

Some wrasses have been observed consuming flatworms, including:

  • Melanurus Wrasse
  • Six Line Wrasse
  • Yellow “Coris” Wrasse (Halichoeres chrysus)

While these fish may help reduce exposed flatworms, they should never be relied upon as the primary treatment, since many flatworms remain hidden deep within the coral’s skeleton.

Prevention

  • Dip every new Euphyllia coral before placing it into quarantine.
  • Quarantine all Euphyllia for 4–6 weeks before introducing them into your display aquarium.
  • Inspect the coral under magnification before purchase and throughout quarantine.
  • Remove disposable frag plugs whenever practical.
  • Avoid sharing fragging tools, basters, or containers between quarantine and display systems.
  • Never introduce shipping or dip water into your display aquarium.
